There's been an awakening in the Force, and Stephen Colbert can feel it. A few weeks ago, the Vatican's daily newspaper, L'Osservatore Romano, posted their review of Star Wars: The Force Awakens, and it was not kind, to say the least. Now, Colbert, who is a practicing Roman Catholic, is speaking out about his feelings on the review and the "crisis of faith" it's caused him.

The Late Show host discussed the Star Wars review, which describes the film as "confused and hazy." In particular, the review criticizes the dark side of the Force in the film, saying, "The new director's set-up fails most spectacularly in its representation of evil, meaning the negative characters." It goes on to say that the original films' villains were much better in comparison, calling the resulting newer villains the "clumsiest and tackiest" they could have been.

The review goes on to say the film is "sloppy" and "not a classy reboot like [Christopher] Nolan's Batman."

Colbert, who isn't shy about his love for all things Star Wars, has a lot to say about the comments. "The Vatican, and this is true, gave a better review to Spotlight," Colbert joked on Tuesday night. Spotlight follows the team of journalists who investigated and broke the true story of a huge sexual abuse scandal in the Catholic Church back in 2003.

"This review really has me torn, because I'm now caught in a crisis of faith between deeply held beliefs embedded in me since childhood and the Catholic Church," Colbert deadpanned.

And while he may not agree with the review, he does defend the Church's apparent stance and jokingly tried to explain it to viewers. "For one thing, it's the story of a Savior who is born in the desert chosen to redeem mankind. That's copyright infringement... and it doesn't help that the original trilogy featured a father, a son and a holy ghost," he jokes, referring to Luke Skywalker, Darth Vader and the ghost of Obi-Wan Kenobi in the original Star Wars films.
