Baz Luhrmann, best known for his flashy directing style in films like Moulin Rouge! and The Great Gatsby, teamed up with Netflix for The Get Down, a 1970's-period musical drama. The trailer shows something between Spike Lee's Do the Ring Thing and Dreamgirls as it releases the 70s back into today.

According to The Guardian, the show marks the first time Luhrmann works for television, and The Get Down tells the story of how hip-hop was born in the streets of the South Bronx in the late 70s, as disco music was dying down and the world was ready for a completely new kind of vibe.

The name of the show comes from an expression that describes the section of a record that can be danced to, or in any case, the one people will get up to dance with.

As Luhrmann's unique style would have it, this new Netflix series borrows a lot from pop culture and big hits over the years.

The Aussie director did this with Moulin Rouge, a film credited with bringing back the musical genre in 2001.  Nearly the entire soundtrack of the movie consisted of great pop songs from the 20th century like Elton John's "Your Song," Madonna's "Like a Virgin" and Queen's "The Show Must Go On."

In any case, Vogue reports that The Get Down had been in the making for a full decade, as Luhrmann struggled to find the right platform to tell this story, ultimately teaming up with Netflix.  The show's fashion is also no less fascinating than the story it's telling.

While the cast is mostly populated with lesser-known stars, there are still a few celebrities around to satisfy the more curious, including Giancarlo Esposito (who you might know as fried chicken chain owner and drug kingpin Gus Fring from Breaking Bad) and Jaden Smith, the infamous son of actors Will and Jada Pinkett-Smith.
