MLB Hot Stove: Los Angeles Dodgers Cut Brian Wilson

By Joseph Trezza | Dec 21, 2014 11:42 AM EST

We can grieve for formerly great closer Brian Wilson, who was released Friday by the Los Angeles Dodgers despite $9.5 million left on his contract. Or we can grieve for the part of him that's most worthy of grieving for: his spectacular, congenial beard. That's right, the best beard in all baseball, the one that parties with Charlie Sheen and ruins his host's chances of signing with the New York Yankees, according to CBS Sports, is now officially unemployed. Wilson rose to fame as the shutdown closer of the 2010 World Series champion San Francisco Giants. That year, he recorded his third consecutive 30-plus-save season, led the league with 48 and pitched to a 1.81 ERA in 70 appearances. He was dominant in the playoffs, and as his success grew so did his facial hair. Fame followed right behind it and his mustache began to curl and you wondered just how deep down there his chin actually lived. But a mediocre season in 2011 left Wilson in need of Tommy John surgery and he missed all of 2012 before latching on with arch-enemy Los Angeles in 2013. The Dodgers gave WIlson the eighth-inning job with intentions of having him set up for incumbent closer Kenley Jansen. Wilson struggled to recover and was awful in 2014, posting a 4.66 ERA in 61 appearances. The struggles of Wilson and the rest of the bullpen were one of the only things standing between the Dodgers's excellent roster and a World Series appearance. Read More »

MLB Hot Stove: San Diego Padres Add Justin Upton, Wil Myers, Matt Kemp For Stacked Lineup, Good Chances In NL West [PHOTO]

By Joseph Trezza | Dec 19, 2014 12:57 PM EST

For so much of the past 20 years, it almost seemed like the San Diego Padres didn't even know who the good players were. Now, in just a week, it seems like they've acquired all of them. Who are these Padres, the ones that just traded for Matt Kemp, Wil Myers, Justin Upton and Derrick Norris? Who are these Padres, the usually flint-sticked team that now has enough hitting to make 2014 All-Star Seth Smith expendable? And where did they come from? Read More »

Yasiel Puig's Instagram: L.A. Dodgers OF Parties With DJ Khaled, Plays FIFA, Tributes Kobe Bryant

By Joseph Trezza | Dec 15, 2014 12:56 PM EST

Yasiel Puig spent last week celebrating his 24th birthday appearing on video game covers and selling a whole mess of vitamin water. How would the Los Angeles Dodgers superstar follow that? Could it be topped? Turns out he spent this week — during which the Dodgers completely overhauled their roster — mainly chilling. That is, according to his Instragram. Puig made nine posts to Instagram this week, an Adrian Gonzalez-like slow week for him that started with a snap of him and DJ Khaled because, you know, they the best. But after that things died down in the life of Yasiel Puig, which apparently means playing a lot of FIFA. Puig's from Cuba and he's 24, so the fact that he unwinds with FIFA isn't exactly a suprise. But that he's this proud of his wins maybe is. Puig published four FIFA videos to Instagram this week, the first three followed immediately by two of grainy footage of a muscular man climbing out of a pool. Boy, would a translator help out here. Then a day later Puig honored his fellow Los Angeles sports star Kobe Bryant with a fitting tribute when Bryant passed Michael Jordan to become third on the all-time NBA scoring list. The photo is a graphic of Bryant driving to the hoop and Puig, next to him, bowing — because it seems that trip to Japan had a lasting impression on young Yasiel. Above the graphic is a list of the NBA all-time scoring leaderboard, with Bryant highlighted above Jordan. Maybe this is an elaborate marketing ploy by Puig to make him more L.A.-likable, or maybe the kid just admires greatness. He has the potential for it one day for sure. Read More »

By Joseph Trezza | Dec 08, 2014 03:55 PM EST

San Francisco Giants ace Madison Bumgarner earned World Series MVP honors after allowing one earned run in 21 Fall Classic innings, an accomplishment that sparked another prestigious honor Monday, Dec. 8. On Monday, Bumgarner was named "Sports Illustrated's" Sportsman of the Year for his efforts, beating out a crowded field of candidates that included Michael Sam and Kansas City Royals fans. Sam came out as the first publicly gay football player in February. And Bumgarner was the only thing standing between Royals fans enjoying a World Series title they had been waiting 29 years for. He clinched Game 7 of the World Series with five innings of shutdown relief, pitching on just three days's rest. Read More »

Chrissy Teigen Vs. 50 Cent - Dodgers First Pitch

By Kenneth Brown | Aug 06, 2014 06:15 PM EDT

It's all happening for rapper 50 Cent recently. He has had a feud with boxer Floyd Mayweather, and tried to involve Nelly and Shantel Jackson, too. Could model Chrissy Teigen and her partner John Legend get involved in their celebrity feuds, too? Videos surfaced showing her preparing for her Los Angeles Dodgers first pitch in an MLB game, and many started to say she was better than 50, who notoriously flopped just weeks ago. The game has been and gone, and Teigen nailed it, which has prompted the world to once again mock the Animal Ambition artist. Whether it's dating, models, music or baseball, 50 can't keep himself away from the eye of the public. Read More »
