After what seems like a constant influx of rumors and spoilers surrounding the second Star Wars Anthology spin off, standalone movie, we can now pretty much confirm that Boba Fett is the subject of the upcoming film. In fact, this new project is described as an origin movie, giving fans of the bounty hunter a deeper look into his past, learning how he became the legend we all fell in love with in Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. In a shareholders call this week, Disney CEO Bob Iger revealed some huge news concerning the next two chapters of the Star Wars universe. We learned that the first spin-off, standalone movie project in the Lucasfilm franchise officially has a name and a star! Academy Award nominee Felicity Jones will star in director Gareth Edwards' Star Wars: Rogue One. Iger also announced that Star Wars: Episode VIII, the sequel to J.J. Abrams' 2015 blockbuster The Force Awakens, would officially be written and directed by Rian Johnson (Looper, Brick) and would hit theaters on May 26, 2017. Though we still have no idea what director Gareth Edwards' 2016 standalone Star Wars film is based on, this week we learned of four high profile actresses that have reportedly auditioned for roles in the spin-off movie! Early rumors and reports speculated that we could see a Han Solo storyline after this year's The Force Awakens, but now our focus is on the actresses that allegedly met with producers for the film. With the anticipation around Star Wars: The Force Awakens' 2015 release date approaching, but there's still plenty of excitement around the spinoff and standalone projects that Disney announced this year. While we've talked about possible Obi-Wan Kenobi, Han Solo, Boba Fett and Yoda movie projects, this week another popular character got some standalone speculation.
