This year's Captain America: Civil War introduces a few new Avengers including Spider-Man and Black Panther, but there are more superheroes ahead for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Directors the Russo brothers, Anthony and Joe, recently said that there are "67 characters" in the cast of the two Avengers: Infinity Wars movies, and it's starting to sound like this will actually happen.

The Captain America: Winter Soldier directors are currently at Wizard World New Orleans, and during the event, one of them referred to Hayley Atwell's Agent Carter character as Sharon instead of Peggy, the other one said, per Comic Book Movie, that it was easy to get confused because there are "67 characters" in the Infinity Wars movies.

Of course, fans started taking it literally because it was such a specific number, asking how it was possible that so many characters could be important in just one movie, which prompted the two directors to speak a little further.

"Infinity War is meant to be the culmination of the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe up to that point," the Russos told Collider. "It's very ambitious in its scope, it wants to take everything that you've seen before and coalesce into some kinda of climactic ending. It's complicated ambitious storytelling ... We're not talking about lead characters, just people that make an appearance."

So far, seemingly confirmed characters in the Infinity War films are the Avengers we've already seen, plus Josh Brolin's Thanos as a full-fledged villain, Spidey, Black Panther, Doctor Strange, Ant-Man and The Wasp and Captain Marvel. It's unclear whether the cast of Guardians of the Galaxy will also make an appearance in the Infinity Wars, though it seems plausible considering it's going to be a cosmic event and they already had Thanos as a villain in the first film.

The Infinity Wars, which will also be directed by the Russos, will be divided in two films: the first is scheduled for a May 2018 release and the second will come out a year later, in May 2019.
