There were several amazing new characters introduced in Star Wars: The Force Awakens, but none of them seemed as wise about the Force as Maz Kanata (OK, maybe Supreme Leader Snoke, but he's not as charming as the little alien). As it turns out, Lupita Nyong'o's diminutive Pirate Queen had a scene where she is revealed to be able to use the Force, but it ended up on the cutting room floor!

In an interview with Collider, the film's SFX supervisor Chris Corbould shared some details about a deleted scene that involved Maz, some unfortunate Stormtroopers and the castle ceiling.

"There was a particular part of a scene that never made it, where they go underneath the castle and they're going into the underground passageways, and Stormtroopers are coming down the stairs and Maz uses her powers to collapse the ceiling," Corbould revealed, adding that he truly liked how the scene would have turned out.

"From my point of view, [that] worked absolutely brilliantly because you had all the main actors running up and then Maz does her bit and then the whole ceiling collapses in front of them, but that never made it," he said. "That was a shot I was quite proud of, actually, it worked really, really well."

So does this confirm that Maz is actually a Jedi, or just a Force-sensitive individual? And more importantly, why did director J.J. Abrams decide to leave this particular scene out of the movie's final cut?

It is possible that the scene was deleted to make way for a change in Maz's role in the film? Although the character was supposed to have a bigger role in The Force Awakens, there may have been some last-minute changes to the script that left Maz with less screen time. Hopefully, there will be more of the Pirate Queen in Star Wars Episode VIII and Episode IX so it will finally be revealed if she can truly use the Force.
