Since opening September 21, 2012, Brooklyn's Barclays Center has hosted a number of huge events outside of it's usual gig as the home of the Brooklyn Nets. Jay-Z opened up the arena with a string of concerts, then a number of big performers visited the Barclays Center such as the Rolling Stones and Barbara Streisand. In addition, Beyonce and Rihanna have concerts scheduled in the summer of 2013. However, another major event will be taking place in Brooklyn this year. MTV just announced that the 30th annual MTV Video Music Awards will be hosted at the Barclays Center.

The last time the Video Music Awards were hosted in New York City was 2009 at Radio City Music Hall. The awards show will be airing live Sunday, August 25. This is big news for Brooklyn and MTV. The music network teased the announcement by posting pictures on their social media pages showing their famous "Moonman" award traveling from Los Angeles, CA to Brooklyn, NY.

MTV's Video Music Awards are usually the place to see music's biggest stars and some must see moments. At the VMA's Madonna kissed Britney Spears, Michael Jackson locked lips with Lisa Marie Presley, and a slew of other headline grabbing moments occurred. The show has also proven to be a big hosting gig for celebrities and comedians. Big name comedians such as Eddie Murphy, Russell Brand, Chris Rock, and Ben Stiller have hosted in the past. Comedian Kevin Hart hosted the show in 2012.

Last year's VMA's took place in Los Angeles at the Staples Center on September 6, 2012. It was the least watched VMA show since 2007, which may be why MTV is shaking things up a bit this year by moving the show to Brooklyn. A host has not been named yet for this year, but it will certainly be a coveted gig.

New York City's Mayor Michael Bloomberg said about the announcement, "Brooklyn is home to icons like the Cyclone in Coney Island and the Brooklyn Bridge, and now it can lay claim to the MTV 'Video Music Awards. Bringing the VMAs to Brooklyn will mean hundreds of jobs as crews work on the production and provide a boost to our local economy as attendees stay in hotels, visit local eateries and experience all Brooklyn and our City have to offer."
