It's easy to assume that one of the factors behind the success of Star Wars: The Force Awakens is the fact that the film's leads were female (Rey, played by Daisy Ridley) and black (Finn, portrayed by John Boyega). But now that Episode VII is a box-office hit, will the future Star Wars films finally introduce a gay character? If you ask director J.J. Abrams, the answer is "Of course!"

According to Daily Beast, Abrams recently hosted the US-Ireland Alliance's annual Oscar Wilde Awards, where he enthusiastically confirmed that the world should be ready for an openly gay Star Wars character.

"When I talk about inclusivity it's not excluding gay characters," Abrams admitted. "It's about inclusivity. So of course."

Although there hasn't been a Star Wars character that has been identified as gay, the director of The Force Awakens stated that people shouldn't be surprised if the future films finally introduce an LGBT character.

"I would love it," he admitted, adding that anything is possible in Star Wars.

"To me, the fun of Star Wars is the glory of possibility," Abrams said. "So it seems insanely narrow-minded and counterintuitive to say that there wouldn't be a homosexual character in that world."

It would make sense that a universe filled with an infinite number of exotic life-forms and strange creatures would also have several sexual orientations, but fans are beginning to wonder which characters would eventually identify as gay. Boyega has previously joked about the possibility that Finn and Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac) could take their bromance to another level, but it seems highly unlikely that Star Wars would want to go there with the characters.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens has earned more than 2 billion in the worldwide box office. Star Wars Episode VIII will hit theaters on December 15, 2017 while Star Wars Episode IX is scheduled for release in 2019.
