Big Bang Theory fans are about to meet Leonard's father, and recent reports suggest he'll be played by small-screen vet Judd Hirsch in the Season 9 finale.

It would be  the first time when Leonard's dad would be seen on the blockbuster CBS sitcom. Details of the Taxi alum's character are still under wraps, but showrunner Steve Molaro told The Hollywood Reporter the finale will leave the fans wondering what will happen next.

Johnny Galecki, 40, who plays Leonard, met Hirsch during the tribute episode to James Burrows and they both started talking about the possibility of Galecki to come on board.

"I rewatched the first two or three seasons of Taxi -- not because I wanted to base Leonard on his character but the purpose his character served, this anchor in this group of people -- and he was just as much at times a voice of reason as he was just as confused as everyone else. I shared that with him, and a lightning bolt struck ... or another merlot ... and I said, 'Would you have any interest in playing my dad on the show?'" Galecki added.

The Big Bang Theory, a comedy about socially awkward nerds and hot and common-sense neighbor, Penny (Kaley Cuoco), began airing in 2007. Leonard's father, an anthropologist, has been discussed on the show  but has never appeared.

After that conversation, Galecki pitched the idea to Molera, and the team then started to think about the characteristics of Leonard's father, Variety reported.

The Big Bang Theory returns to CBS on March 31.
