On the heels of last year's Star Wars: The Force Awakens landing on home media, Lucasfilm's next foray into a galaxy far, far away is getting fans excited: the first teaser trailer for spinoff Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is here! On it, we get a first glimpse at Oscar nominee Felicity Jones donning Rebel attire -- and attitude -- as new character Jyn Erso.

As it had been announced through Star Wars' YouTube and social networks, Lucasfilm released the first teaser for the upcoming movie on Thursday morning, introducing Jyn Erso, the latest lead character in the saga created by George Lucas. Much like Carrie Fisher's Princess Leia, Natalie Portman's Queen Amidala and most recently Daisy Ridley's Rey, Jyn is being presented as a strong female figure in the space franchise -- and the first look of the character's certainly an attention grabber.

In the teaser, a woman that looks like an authority figure describes Jynn as "on [her] own from the age of 15, reckless, aggressive, undisciplined," to which the character replies dryly: "This is a Rebellion, isn't it? I rebel."

Could we be looking at the franchise's new Han Solo?

Rogue One is part prequel and part sequel: its story is set before the events of Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope, so it ties the prequels to the original films. It's also the first film in a planned series of Star Wars spinoffs, which will include origin films for Han Solo and Boba Fett.

"[Rogue One] goes into new territory, exploring the galactic struggle from a ground-war perspective while maintaining that essential Star Wars feel that fans have come to know," Kathleen Kennedy, current head of Lucasfilm, said when the film began production. "Gareth [Edwards] is such an innovative director and I'm so excited to be working with him and the extraordinary ensemble cast he's selected for Rogue One."

The cast is indeed extraordinary. Aside from Academy Award nominee Jones, others involved in the film are Hannibal star Mads Mikkelsen, Firefly alum Alan Tudyk, The Terminal actor Diego Luna and Oscar winner Forest Whitaker.

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will premiere on Dec. 16.
