From Walt Disney Pictures and Lucasfilm, a new standalone Star Wars spinoff follows the resistance fighters against Darth Vader. This is the perfect opportunity to check out Diego Luna, Felicity Jones, and Donnie Yen in director Gareth Edwards' Rogue One: A Star Wars Story teaser trailer.

As we previously mentioned, much of the plot of Rogue One is being kept under wraps and tightly-lipped. What we do know is that the prequel takes place before the events of Star Wars: A New Hope. This standalone film will be a departure from the saga, but will have familiar elements from the Star Wars universe. At the height of the Empire's reign of terror, the Rebels are sent out on a mission to steal the plans of the Death Star.

Check out our 5 thoughts on the Rogue One trailer here:

5) There's No Jedi!

There's not a single sight of a Jedi and a lightsaber in this entire trailer! Because this is the first Star Wars flick without a Jedi, there's going to be mercenaries, bounty hunters, Storm Troopers, and anti-heroes galore! Damn this movie is going to be awesome!

4) It's A Heist Movie!

The rap list for Jyn Erso (Felicity Jones) includes aggravated assault, resisting arrest, and forgery. Good lord, I think I'm in love! Just like Snake Plissken in Escape from New York, Jyn has to do this one thing to wipe her slate clean. Ordered by Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly), Jyn has to go out and get the plans of the Death Star!

3) Poe Dameron's Father?

How does Rogue One fit into the Star Wars mythology, especially with the new trilogy coming out? We have our own theory that Diego Luna's character could possibly be Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac)'s father. Dameron's parents were introduced back in Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire.

2) IP Man!

The Hong Kong actor was easily one of the best things to come out of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon: Sword of Destiny. We get to see footage of Donnie Yen playing off his Donatello skills! Yen just beats the crap out of the stormtroopers with his walking stick!

1) Gareth Edwards!

Before directing the Godzilla remake, filmmaker Gareth Edwards earned critical praise from his indie sci-fi/horror love story, Monsters. Using his laptop to create the alien effects, Edwards mishmashes improvisation and handheld camerawork in his visually captivating Monsters. You have to see the exceptional performances by Whitney Able (Mercy) and Scoot McNairy (Halt & Catch Fire).

Rogue One: A Star Wars Story arrives in theaters December 16, 2016.
