NBC's 'Hairspray Live' Cast Adds Jennifer Hudson & Original Edna Turnblad, Harvey Fierstein!

Hairspray Live! is the latest beloved musical coming to NBC after the success of Grease and The Sound of Music, nearly a decade after the John Travolta movie hit theaters. Now, the new TV movie is shaping up, and it's bringing in two big Broadway stars: Jennifer Hudson in the role of Motormouth Mable and original Edna Turnblad Harvey Fierstein, reprising his Tony-winning role.

The announcement of Hudson and Fierstein's involvement in the cast of the live TV adaptation came through NBC News. And so far, they're the only two actors announced.

Even with just two names announced, NBC is kicking it off with the right foot when it comes to casting. Hudson is an American Idol alum as well as an Oscar winner for her work in the Dreamgirls adaptation. She's currently playing Shug in the Broadway revival of The Color Purple.

Fierstein, on the other hand, is a Broadway veteran with multiple Tony Awards, whose past credits on the stage include the original Hairspray, Torch Song Trilogy, La Cage Aux Folles and writing the book for Cyndi Lauper's musical Kinky Boots.

Fierstein isn't only reprising his role in front of the camera for NBC's live rendition of Hairspray, he's also behind the scenes, adapting the screenplay for its live TV run. Hairspray Live! will be directed by Kenny Leon, who was behind the camera for last December's The Wiz Live.

"We are beyond thrilled with this incredibly talented duo of stars for Hairspray Live!" said NBC's Entertainment Chairman Robert Greenblatt, according to Today. "Harvey Fierstein created the role of Edna Turnblad on Broadway in an indelible Tony-winning performance that demanded to be memorialized on film, and we're happy he wanted to step into her shoes one last, unforgettable time."

Hairspray Live! will air on NBC on December 8 from Los Angeles -- we'll have to wait and see who else is involved!
