After rumors went around regarding the possible casting of Star Wars: The Force Awakens lead actress Daisy Ridley in the role of Lara Croft, it turns out the studio went a different direction. Alicia Vikander, who months back took home an Oscar for her role in The Danish Girl, will be taking over Angelina Jolie's role in the Tomb Raider reboot!

According to Variety, 27-year-old Vikander has officially signed to play the adventurous archeologist in the upcoming reboot. She's the first member of the cast to be confirmed, in a project set to be directed by Roar Uthaug, who previously directed The Wave.

This is the first major role Vikander has signed up to do since her fabulous 2015, where she starred not only in the period film that earned her an Oscar but also in Alex Garland's directing début Ex Machina, for which she was nominated for a Golden Globe.

Swedish actress Vikander, who's also Michael Fassbender's girlfriend, is also set to appear on this year's Jason Bourne sequel alongside Matt Damon.

For weeks, there had been rumors of Ridley, who's English like the Lara Croft character, was going to nab the role. Weeks back, the actress herself confirmed to The Hollywood Reporter that she was in talks to play the videogame heroine.

Those who aren't prone to playing video games know Lara Croft better from Jolie's characterization. Much like Vikander now, Jolie was cast as Croft as a young Oscar winner. She played the role twice: in the 2001 film Lara Croft: Tomb Raider alongside future James Bond Daniel Craig and then a second time two years later in Tomb Raider: The Cradle of Life.

Vikander signing up for the role is the first major casting decision, and there's no word yet on what the story will be. There's still no title or release date announced for the reboot.
