It seems the Mother Monster has caught the acting bug after her Golden Globe-winning stint at American Horror Story: Hotel; she could be taking following the footsteps of two of the biggest names in Hollywood musicals! Lady Gaga is currently in talks to take the female lead in a new remake of A Star Is Born, alongside Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper!

Earlier this week, Deadline reported that Gaga, fresh off her Academy Award nomination for the song "'Til It Happens to You," is currently the most likely candidate to take the role of the rising singer from A Star Is Born. It seems the move to cast the AHS actress has been months in the making, and Cooper and Gaga have even been seen together in the past few months, as she's currently in the process of screen testing for the role.

Gaga's negotiations are set to begin shortly.

Back when the project first came to public light in 2011, it was thought that they were screen testing another major pop star: Beyoncé. According to The Hollywood Reporter, the film was originally set to star the "Formation" singer under the direction of Clint Eastwood; however, the project fell through when she became pregnant and Eastwood ultimately decided to work on another musical, the big screen adaptation of Broadway's Jersey Boys.

Now, Cooper is attached to not only co-star but also helm the film, something that would mark his directorial début, producing as well with his own company, Joint Effort. The screenplay as it is now was penned by Will Fetters, and is apparently being reworked by him and Cooper.

Whoever ends up playing the role of the rising singer will have very big shoes to fill, as this will be the third time this story reaches the big screen. The original film, from 1937, starred Janet Gaynor alongside Fredric March; it was later remade in 1954 with Judy Garland and James Mason and then in 1976 with Barbra Streisand and Kris Kristofferson in the lead roles.

In every iteration, the story follows a young singer who comes to Hollywood with dreams of becoming a star, until finding a once-famous man who takes her under his wing. As she becomes a big name in show business, he's unable to cope with his own career and goes on a downward spiral of substance abuse; not much unlike the story of Oscar-winning film The Artist, though far more tragic.

There's still no date for the release of the new A Star Is Born film.
