Real Steal is a heartwarming film about a neglectful father (played by Hugh Jackman) and spunky son (played by Dakota Goyo)that bonded over the "robot fighting", a sport that replaced boxing due to the crowd's growing thirst for violence.

Sounds like a pretty cool movie right? Although Real Steal gained a fair amount of loyal fans, the film grossed below par in box office compared to production cost. In short, the film was considered a flop. So the idea of a part 2 wouldn't seem possible. But according to Den of Geek, the very busy director Shawn Levy who admitted to be frequently bombarded with tweets asking about a Real Steel sequel has given a promising response.

No confirmation on the sequel just yet, but the director opened up saying the truth of the matter was movie sequel plans for Real Steal began 6 months before the film was even released. Ideas for Real Steel 2 came around the first film's test screening, but Levy stated in his own words, "The simple truth, the most concise truth I can express, is that it proved, and it has proven, really hard to come up with a sequel that doesn't feel like a re-hash of the first movie."

According to Blastr, one of the plot ideas for the movie sequel was an origin story for the sparring robot named Atom. In a highly cited interview, Shawn Levy expanded about Atom and "...his design that might have embedded some artificial or organic intelligence and consciousness." Levy also expressed how he would love to see Atom beat the "undefeated" champion robot fighter Zeus as much as fans do too.

Shawn Levy finally stated that the team had attempted to build story drafts along with some writers, but none of the drafts were good enough to impress him, Hugh, and Steven. The director also expressed his conviction to his sentiment that if there will not be a sequel unless he is certain that it will be better than the first film.
