Eyebrow microblading is a form of cosmetic tattoo used for semi-permanent makeup. This technique is essentially similar to permanent tattooing as it involves using ink and a manual tool, usually a small blade, to fill in the eyebrows. Microblading, like permanent tattooing shares the same health risks like HIV and hepatitis and officials are warning patrons of homebased businesses that are not regulated by the government.

The Interior Health Authority advises people who get eyebrow microblading to check the credentials of the people offering their services. Special vigilance should be taken especially if they do cosmetic tattooing services in their home and advertise it on social media like Facebook or websites like Craigslist, CTV News reports.

A spokesperson from the organization warned that because eyebrow microblading involves breaking the skin to deposit ink, using unsterilized tools could cause Hepatitis, HIV and even skin infections. Officials say that regulated businesses for cosmetic tattoos and eyebrow microblading have annual inspections and are mandated by law to comply with sanitation and disinfection procedures. Customers who want to ensure their safety can ask for the microblading technician to use a single-use pen.

According to Elle, eyebrow microblading is expensive because the results can last up to more than three years with regular touch-ups bi-annually. Additionally, cosmetic tattooing can take a lot of time because it involves shaping the eyebrows to fit the client's face and manually depositing ink to the skin with a small blade to simulate hair growth. Aftercare is also important after having this procedure as the microbladed brows can become irritated with sweat and even water. However, redness, irritation, and swelling are normal directly after having it done.

Those who are interested in getting this procedure are advised to do their research about licensed establishments they plan to get the service from.
