"Wayward Pines" Season 3 will not be happening this summer, but producers have assured the fans that it hasn't been cancelled. The show became a hit during its Season 1 run, but it struggled to find ground in Season 2. However, it was still the number one TV series during the summer, so the cast and crew were hopeful for a third season. The cast of Season 2 are set to appear again in Season 3.

"Wayward Pines" Season 2 ratings dipped low

"Wayward Pines" was based on the novel of the same title by Blake Crouch. The story begins with a secret agent who finds himself in a strange town, Wayward Pines, where residents aren't allowed to leave. The agent, Ethan Burke (Matt Dillon) winds up leading the town into exploring what lies outside Wayward Pines. What he finds is that it's already far into the future where most of humanity have been wiped out, with Wayward Pines being the sole habitable community.

The second season of "Wayward Pines" had many new characters and is led by Dr. Theo Yedlin (Jason Patric), who is stuck between the followers of the First Generation (the brainwashed students in Season 1) and the rebel groups led by Burke's son. The finale of Season 2 pointed to a stunning surprise regarding the Abbies' evolution.

"Wayward Pines" Season 3 air date hasn't been confirmed

FOX Entertainment president, David Madden, said that there was still a lot of planning going on. Talks about "Wayward Pines" Season 3 had not been finalized yet, he said during the Television Critics Association. Buddy TV reported that the network's chairman, Gary Newman, clarified that Season 3 had not been cancelled.

M. Night Shyamalan produced the "Wayward Pines". His strange, dark style certainly added to the show's already weird but compelling premise. The writers have also said that Season 3 has a similarly compelling idea. After Season 1, the script veered away from the major plot of the book, which is why it struggled to gain viewers in Season 2. The show's producers have said that the series will explore evolution some more.

In fact, "Wayward Pines" Season 3 will show some surprising twists about the Abbies and the rest of the human population. Deadline reported that the network was going to focus on unscripted shows this summer. "Wayward Pines" had not come together quickly for a summer release and there had been some last-minute talks about casting. However, the chairman promised that fans will still eventually see "Wayward Pines" on Fox.
