If there is a question that "The Vampire Diaries" fans are wondering right now, it could probably be on whether Nina Dobrev will come back as Elena for the season finale.  Dobrev left the series in 2015 after six seasons being central to the story, and now, fans hope that Dobrev might return to resurrect her character, Elena Gilbert, to wrap up the series. Elena has been sleeping and can only be resurrected if Bonnie Bennett dies.

However, Dobrev hasn't confirmed about her return to "TVD" Season 8. The creators, Julie Plec and Kevin Williamson, have expressed their strong feeling for Dobrev to come back as Elena considering Elena is the central character that plays a great deal into Damon's morality. The creators also said that Dobrev really wants to see her character at the end of the show and can't wait to come back. So, if Dobrev really commits to what she said, this might be the right time to prove that.

Meanwhile, Nina Dobrev refuses to talk about her involvement in the upcoming season: "I haven't ever told secrets in the past and I'm definitely not going to start now, sorry, guys, I'm not allowed to talk about that." Previously, Nina Dobrev was reportedly leaving "TVD" to pursue a bigger role in a big blockbuster film. The actress is now preoccupied with her latest film "xXx: Return of Xander Cage." In this film, Dobrev plays the role of Becky, a government agent weapon techie.

Besides Nina Dobrev's possibility to come back as Elena, there is also a fan-theory saying that there might be a flash-forward plot in the final season. A flash-forward plot would give Bonnie a chance to live her full life before Elena comes back to life. However, the flash-forward plot is likely impossible since the creators have different opinions about that. The creators also said that there's still be another way to make sure the finale can meet fans' expectations on how the story is going to end.
