"The Mummy" reboot, top billed by Tom Cruise, will be unlike its 1999 predecessor. The movie, which is part of Universal Picture's monster movie universe, promises to be as action-packed as expected. Here's everything we know so far about the movie.

"The Mummy" reboot cast

The cast to the upcoming monster flick is one to beat. Aside from Cruise, the movie also features Russell Crowe, Annabelle Wallis and "Kingsman: The Secret Service" breakout actress Sofia Boutella.

In "The Mummy" reboot, Boutella plays "an ancient queen whose destiny was unjustly taken from her." Her character is now awakened in the modern world and she brings with her a malevolent force that has grown over millennia "and terrors that defy human comprehension," Den of Geek reported. In the entire "The Mummy" history, which dates back to the 1930s, Boutella is the franchise's first ever female mummy villain.

"The Mummy" reboot story

Speaking to Entertainment Weekly, Alex Kurtzman revealed that "The Mummy" will feature two origin stories that will connect with other films in Universal's monster movie universe. Trouble arises after Cruise's character and his crew gets into a plane crash while transporting the remains of Boutella's mummy.

The movie is said to be more explosive and action-packed than that of the 1999 movie "The Mummy," which starred Brandon Fraser, Rachel Weisz and Arnold Vosloo as the feared mummy. A sequel of the movie was also made and a spinoff that focused on the Scorpion King, played by Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson.

Universal's monster movie universe

As previously mentioned, "The Mummy" is the first of Universal's monster movie universe. Essentially, this universe works like the Marvel Cinematic Universe and the DC Comics Extended Universe, although they start out differently and feature various characters but will end up getting tied together eventually.

All the titles from Universal's horror movie catalogue are going to be remade and given a more modern twist, including "Invisible Man," which will be played by Johnny Depp. Crowe is attached to the role of Dr. Jekyll.

"The Mummy" reboot release date

The movie is set to premiere in theaters on June 9, 2017.
