BAFTA Awards 2017: La La Land Dominates the Victory Stand, Criticised For Ignoring Minorities

The prestigious British Academy Film Awards concluded on February 12 with traditional gloom and bloom. The 70th British Academy Film Awards commonly known as BAFTA awards were distributed among the winning celebrities in different categories from all fields of the film world.

The Royal Albert Hall, London was home to Super Stars of the entertainment World with shining faces and excited hearts. Stephen Fry was hosting the mega event for the 12th time. Nominees were announced on Jan. 10 with La La Land topping the list with nominations in most categories. La La Land was nominated in 11 categories.

According to BBC, La La Land was also the leading winner of Golden Globe awards. La La won 7 Prizes in the Golden Globes. Damien Chazelle snatched the BAFTA award for best director. Affleck won his prize for the drama "Manchester by the Sea" and was seen delighted.

Other Winners included Linus Sandgren for best Cinematography, Kenneth Lonergan for best screenplay, Emma Stone for best actress, Justin Hurwitz for best original music, Luke Davis for the best-adapted screenplay, Dev Patel for best acting in supporting role and Viola Davis for the best-supporting actress.

Mel Brooks was awarded the Academy Fellowship for his contribution to the promotion of Cinema. The ceremony was broadcasted live from BBC One at 9:00 pm UTC time. The Guardian reported that the awarding bodies are not active agents and the awards reflect a vote which lacks consensus and doubts the nomination procedure.

The British Academy Film Awards came under criticism last year for ethnic minorities in the nominations after which BAFTA management announced solid steps for promoting diversity in the film industry and within the BAFTA mechanism.

However, some circles criticized this event also for ignoring the Asians, Blacks and other ethnic groups in the nominations. Actors, directors, and films from the minority and ethnic groups were reported to be either ignored or underestimated in the contest.
