After the "La La Land-Moonlight" mix-up that took place at the 89th Academy Awards, it has now become clear that the incident happened due to exchange of envelopes. Reports claim that the man in-charge of handling the Oscars envelopes is blamed for the gaffe that saw La La Land named best picture.

Price Waterhouse Cooper's accountant Brian Cullinan, was the one who had to handover the envelope containing the best picture winner's name, to presenters Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway. In a statement, PwC contented that he had handed [them] the back-up envelope for actress in a leading role instead, and that was a mistake.

According to BBC, Cullinan was busy Tweeting a picture of Emma Stone backstage, minutes before the entire episode took place. Though, the picture was later deleted but still exists on a few websites. While Cullinan was having a complete bundle of envelopes where he was standing, on the other side of the stage, Martha Ruiz, another PwC accountant, had a duplicate set with her.

This is the reason behind the fact that Emma Stone, the best actress winner and presenter Beatty carried the same envelope. However, it was evident that as Beatty was about to announce the name of the winner, he got much confused and uncomfortable on the stage. He then passed his card to the other presenter Faye Dunaway, according to The New York Times.

Seeing the words "La La Land" beneath Emma Stone's name, Dunaway declared her musical romance the winner of the best picture award. As per the accountancy firm, "Once the error occurred, protocols for correcting it were not followed through quickly enough by Mr Cullinan or his partner."

The 89th Academy Awards was hosted by talk show host Jimmy Kimmel. As it came to an end, Kimmel promised to never host the show again.
