Even though "Modern Family" has always retained some of the highest ratings in television history, it might not return for a Season 9. This is because the cast members are allegedly adamant about receiving higher pay than they are currently making, something that the ABC might not agree to give them.

"Modern Family" fans might want to record the remaining episodes of Season 8 as there are no guarantees that their favorite show will be returning for another season. According to The Hollywood Reporter, "Modern Family" Season 8 is about to wrap up and there is still no word from the network about the possible renewal of the series. This is largely due to the fact that none of the main cast members have signed their individual contracts for Season 9.

One of the reasons for the future of the show hanging in a limbo is because the cast might be gearing up to ask for an increase in their pay. As of "Modern Family" Season 8, the award-winning ensemble is making a whopping $350,000 per episode. Since ABC is dishing in a large portion of the production cost, including the salaries of the cast, the network might not be willing to give in to the demands of a higher pay.

Viewers also got uncomfortable when Jesse Tyler Ferguson, who plays the character of Mitchell Pritchett on the show, hinted on The Ellen Show that "Modern Family" Season 8 might be the last in the series. He even joked about how his father is busy looking for a job for him, in case the show did not make it to Season 9.

ABC has not commented on anything conclusive yet, as it still has until the month of May to come to a decision. However, it is likely that the network will push to reach some sort of an agreement with the actors and actresses for "Modern Family" Season 9, since it is the second highest rated show on ABC, pulling in an impressive average of 4.0 currently.
