This December, "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" will premiere and pick up right after the events of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens". There have been many rumors about the identity of the last Jedi, with many fans pointing to Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). Director JJ Abrams himself hinted that the actor's performance in the sequel might just earn him an Oscar.

Director JJ Abrams told NY Daily last week that Mark Hamill will most likely be in the running for an Academy Award for Best Actor after "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" hits the theaters. There have been many rumors about the sequel being Hamill's last appearance and that the movie could feature Luke's death, ushering in a new generation of Jedi Knights.

Mark Hamill himself teased his performance on Twitter. He wrote, "Slowly turn, remove hood, but don't start your lengthy Oscar-worthy monologue until you get to that rock over there." Fans will remember that Hamill appeared at the end of the last film, but he had no speaking lines. Now it seems that the 65-year-old actor will finally get to impress the fans with, perhaps, a tear-jerking performance in "Star Wars: The Last Jedi".

Fans might be surprised, but the cast has never won an award yet. Screen Rant reported that the original trilogy won mostly technical awards like: Sound (Mixing), Music (Original Score), Film Editing, Visual Effects, Art Direction-Set Decoration, Costume Design, and Special Achievement Award. The crew is hoping that one member of the "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" cast will finally win the Best Actor Award.

There is still no news for the title of the ninth film, but production will begin this summer. In "The Force Awakens", fans witnessed Han Solo's (Harrison Ford) death. "Star Wars: Episode 8" will then be General Leia Organa's (Carrie Fisher) last appearance. If Luke Skywalker dies in the sequel, too, it will set up a new generation to defeat the Empire. "Star Wars: The Last Jedi" will premiere on Dec. 15, 2017.
