Randy Pitchford of Gearbox Software gave everyone a big surprise at this year's Game Developers Conference (GDC). The company's CEO showed all the conference attendees the Unreal Engine 4 they are using to develop "Borderlands 3."

Pitchford maintained that what he showed at GDC was not from the actual "Borderlands 3" game. Rather, Gearbox Software used Unreal Engine 4 to show how the game would look like once its art is rendered. The walkthrough was a quick one, but it was long enough to pique the curiosity of attendees.

Forbes pointed out that though the footage was not really from "Borderlands 3," it is possible that it contained clues as to the future game's contents. Pitchford went to a lot of trouble to hide the face of the female character he used throughout. At a certain point, he even moved the camera to make sure that her shoulder pad kept her identity hidden. This character, then, could be someone those who have played the previous "Borderlands" games might recognize.

However, Pitchford's GDC presentation let everyone know that "Borderlands 3" is Gearbox's next gaming project. Polygon wrote that the CEO already confirmed as much at the 2016 PAX East. He even mentioned that Scott Kester, who worked on another Gearbox game, will handle art direction. Furthermore, he will be joined by Mikey Neumann who will take care of writing the game's story.

As of the moment, there is not much that gaming aficionados know about "Borderlands 3." However, as Pitchford's GDC presentation showed, it will feature some things that fans would be familiar with.

"Borderlands 3" would be the third installment of the main "Borderlands" game but the fifth in the franchise. The first one came out in 2009 and was followed by "Borderlands 2" in 2012. After that, Gearbox released "Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel" in 2014. It was followed by "Tales from the Borderlands," an episode structured game series created by Telltale Games that ran for almost a year from 2014 to 2015. There is even a mobile game available for iOS users, "Borderlands Legends," which debuted in 2012.
