The future of "Sherlock" Season 5 looms dim with the possibility of its lead stars not returning for another season. Lead actor Benedict Cumberbatch reportedly wants to do more family-friendly television shows.

Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman are currently busy with their respective schedules. Both actors affirmed that would like to return but there is no assurance that there will be a "Sherlock" Season 5.

Benedict Cumberbatch revealed he wants to do more family-friendly films after he announced that his wife, Sophie Hunter has their second child on the way. 'We'll all be a lot older by the time they get to see them, but yes, I would definitely like to do some child-friendly work in the future," he said. Benedict  Cumberbatch said he would love to keep doing the show and return for "Sherlock" Season 5 but for that to happen, they will have to keep their busy schedules in check. However, at the present rate, it would be very hard to do so.

Series co-creator and writer Steven Moffat said that they do not have any plan to end the series soon but admitted that Season 4 could possibly be the end of it, Telegraph reported. On the other hand, Mark Gatiss said he wants to do a "Sherlock" Season 5 or possible more but the future is in limbo for the moment. "We'd love to do more but, we're genuinely not lying this time, we absolutely don't know," he said.

PBS and BBC may be rethinking their plans to order "Sherlock" Season 5 since the last episode dropped to an all-time low ratings of under 6 million, Independent reported. Should there be another season, Gatiss said it will explore the backstory of the first four seasons starting with how Holmes and Dr. Watson's first meeting when they were young.

Should the series come back for another season, Benedict Cumberbatch will have to fix his schedule for "Sherlock" Season 5 with a very busy schedule in the pipeline. The British actor will reprise his role as Doctor Stephen Strange in "Thor: Ragnarok" alongside Chris Hemsworth. He has also booked the lead roles as Thomas Edison in "The Current War" and the Grinch in "How the Grinch Stole Christmas."
