‘This is Us’ Cast Defends Season Finale, Showrunner Talks Season 2

The cast of "This is Us" defended the show's finale against bad reviews. The series has already been renewed for Season 2 and showrunner Isaac Aptaker gave some details on what to expect.

The hour-long finale concluded with a full blown fight between Rebecca (Mandy Moore) and Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) without revealing how Jack died. This left some discontent with the viewers. In the PaleyFest panel at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, "This is Us" stars Milo Ventimiglia, Mandy Moore, Justin Hartley and Jon Cephas defended the finale, The Hollywood Reporter reported.  

Ventimiglia opined that how Season 1 ended was actually necessary. He went to say that "This Is Us" Season 1 fleshed out Jack's character by showing his darker side.

"People had kind of built Jack up to this statue of gold and, again, he's human. He is someone who, as we saw, has made mistakes and had potential to go down a dark path, as we saw with his past. I think it humanizes him. It doesn't make him any less beloved," he said.

Hartley echoed the same sentiment and commented that Jack's storyline was actually very real and relatable. On the other hand, Mandy Moore told viewers said the cause Jack's death should not be the central point of "This is Us" and encouraged them to just let the show unfold.

Ron Cephas Jones said he understands the disappointment of some of the viewers but insisted that they also felt other feelings too. He went to tease that "This Is Us" Season 2 will be a rollercoaster ride.

Elsewhere, "This Is Us" showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger dropped some hints on what to expect for the next season. They went to say that while people call the show a "dramedy," there will be lighter moments in Season 2, CNN reported.

Berger went to say that they want to find a balance between dramatic moments and comedic moments. In the future, there will also be more singing of Chrissy Metz as Kate. As for Jack, Ventimiglia said he may know something about the fate of his character in "This Is Us" Season 2.
