In an announcement that isn't nearly as surprising at it should be, pop superstar Justin Timberlake will perform at the 2013 MTV Video Music Awards. On their various media platforms, including their Instagram, MTV announced that Timberlake will not only perform for the VMAs but will also receive the Michael Jackson Vanguard Award.

It's unsure what song he will perform at the VMAs, though his new single "Take Back The Night" is likely. "Take Back The Night" is part of Timberlake's "The 20/20 Experience: 2 of 2," which had its full tracklist revealed last night.

Timberlake joins music megastars Lady Gaga, Kanye West, Katy Perry, Miley Cyrus and Robin Thicke as a performer. Daft Punk are also rumored to make an appearance.

The award Timberlake will receive is a lifetime achievement award given out during certain years at the VMAs to musicians and artist who have had a "profound effect on the MTV culture." The honor has been given to artists such as Britney Spears (2011), U2 (2001), Beastie Boys (1998) and Guns N' Roses (1992). The honor was initially called just the Video Vanguard Award, but was named after Michael Jackson in 1991 (the legendary musician received the honor in 1988).

The star-studded VMAs, should be no real surprise to those who pay attention to TV ratings. Last year's awards ceremony -- hosted by Kevin Hart and featuring performances from Rihanna, P!nk and One Direction -- pulled a paltry 6.1 million viewers, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The 2012 ceremonies were lacking in star power and faced stiff cable television competition. The awards show aired in almost the exact same time as President Barack Obama's speech at the Democratic National Convention.

The 2013 MTV Video Music Awards don't have to compete with the Commander in Chief. The show will air on Aug. 25 at 9 p.m. from the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
