Miley Cyrus may just end up as Time magazine's Person of the Year 2013.
Repeat: Miley Cyrus could just be Time magazine's person of the year 2013, making her the immediate successor to President Barack Obama.
Yesterday (Dec. 9), Time announced its 10 finalists for the Person of the Year, and the Bangerz singer made the cut, landing among world leaders and activists. It's odd to see Cyrus on the same shortlist as Pope Francis, Edward Snowden and Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, but there she sits.
Cyrus' top 10 position for Time's Person of the Year comes in the wake of the Internet poll for the same position. With the help of Internet hackers, the rabid Smilers fanbase and even Miss Cyrus herself, she was actually leading the poll for quite some time. In the end, though, the votes evened out and Cyrus lost the people's poll to Egypt's General Adbul Fattah al-Sisi and Turkey's Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
However, Cyrus came in third place, getting 279,300 votes (16.3%), according to Time.
Of course, it's unlikely that Cyrus will actually become Time's Person of the Year, but the editors at the magazine insist her inclusion is more than just a publicity stunt.
In an interview on The Today Show on Monday, managing editor Nancy Gibbs said, "Power is not just political. It can be cultural. It can be spiritual. She came in like a wrecking ball... the most watched video of the year and at a time when we are living with an explosion of exhibitionism, since we all now carry cameras with us at all times, she is a symbol."
Time will reveal the Person of the Year tomorrow (Dec. 11).
