America's sweetheart Reese Witherspoon is featuring in the racy new film Wild, and she spoke with Vogue for its October issue about her risk-taking role in the new film.

Moviegoers and fans know the actress as a charming Southern belle with an adorable personality that we could see being our best friend, but in her role in Wild she wants to counteract those views.

"When people underestimate me, it's actually a comfortable place for me," she told the magazine. "'Oh, that's what you think I am; well, no I'm not.' I'm a complex human being. I have many different shades."

Her journey in the film, based on Cheryl Strayed's memoir about hiking the Pacific Crest Trail to find herself after her mother's sudden death, pushed her acting skills to the limit: learning what it looks like to shoot heroin and perform sexy sex scenes in which she needed to hypnotist to help her get through them.

"I just didn't want to hear, 'Oh, we don't want to see Reese have sex ... Oh, can we not have any profanity?'" She said. "I wanted it to be truthful, I wanted it to be raw, I wanted it to be real."

She reveals that her character Cheryl hits close to home with her real life.

"Nobody knows what goes on behind closed doors, but I think there's a general sense now that I've lived a pretty textured life, so many of the things that Cherly goes through in the book I've been through, you know? I've been married, I've been divorced."

She explains that the roles she was receiving "weren't as dynamic or as interesting as anything I felt I could do."

Many directors know her for her sweet, Southern side, but tabloids and ones close to Witherspoon know that that is not necessarily the case.

Case in point: her 2013 booking for disorderly conduct as Witherspoon and husband Jim Tooth were pulled over for driving erratically and arrested for DUI.
