New York Jets quarterback Geno Smith had sports fans all around the Big Apple scratching their heads over the weekend after it was confirmed that he missed the team's meeting on Saturday night because he was at the movies and had mixed up his time zones.

So, to clear things up, he participated in a conference call yesterday with the media. But instead of helping reporters understand what went down, he left them just as perplexed.

"Mainly I just counted down instead counting up and got the times mixed up," Smith explained, according to ESPN. "So I guess you could say I was thinking I was on west coast time, I mean thinking we were on east coast time when we were actually on west coast time. That was just my mishap and it really had nothing to do with the time zones, I'm aware of that. But for that moment, I got that mixed up."

Apparently, Jets coach Rex Ryan likes to pretend the team is still running on east coast time when they're over on the left coast, and that's where the confusion originates. Ryan schedules team events at their regular east coast times and even changes the players' hotel clocks to read whatever the time would be in New York.

"I just realized at the last second that I got the times mixed up during the movie," Smith said, as reported by the New York Daily News. "And I didn't really have service when I was in there so I actually walked out to call one of my teammates to ask him if I got the times mixed up and it turns out that I [did]. And I just rushed back."

This is the second time in the last week that Smith has been in the news for his off-the-field antics. Last week, he was fined $12,000 for dropping an f-bomb on a fan as he walked off the field at MetLife Stadium.

"I would say it's uncharacteristic," Smith said of his recent actions. "I'm not a guy who's always in the tabloids. I like to stay low-key but I've made some mistakes the past two weeks and I'm aware of it and I've also caused some distractions for my teammates by doing so. My first thing is to apologize to them."
