The Big Bang Theory fans got a real treat last week during the comedy's prom-themed episode "The Prom Equivalency." Sheldon Cooper (Jim Parsons) told Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik) that he loved her! Now the show's executive producer is opening up about how that storyline came to be and what's next for the couple.

Showrunner Steve Molaro revealed that although the "I love you" was an important part of the episode, the prom storyline came first. He also explained that although Amy didn't say it back, we all know she loves Sheldon.

"I think it's safe to say she said it back after her panic attack subsided. Several times. Made it her Facebook status and then proceeded to tell everyone and anyone who would listen," Steve joked in an interview with TV Line.

So why was the moment so important? Simply put, because Sheldon saying those words was something no one ever expected, even the cast itself.

"Truth be told, I wasn't ready for this. I mean, as an actor, I have to be ready for anything the writers throw at me. We all do. It's kind of in our job description. But as Mayim, the person playing Amy, it threw me for a loop," Mayim wrote on her Kveller blog about the "I love you" scene.

"I never know the arc of the plot for my character or our show, and I don't know what the writers have planned for us for this year or for the course of the show. I had literally no idea this was coming, especially this early in the 8th season," she wrote.

As for what it means for the couple's relationship moving forward, Mayim said, "Amy never thought Sheldon would say he loved her, which does not preclude that she assumed he might. It is the overt communication that sends her into her sweet panic mode. It's not that he feels it, although that is beautiful indeed. It's that he says it."

She continues writing, "And it's also the way he says it: with his reasoning and his logic backing it all up. After all we have seen Shamy go through, this is the culmination of a communication in words, but the feelings in theory have already been present for years."

Now that the L-word has been thrown out there, what's next for Sheldon and Amy ... possibly their first sexual encounter? The series's executive producer revealed that there are definitely more milestones coming up.

"I'd like to think there are even more milestones, beyond the bigger more obvious ones, that haven't even occurred to us yet," Steve told TV Line.

As for Sheldon and Amy having sex, he explained, "I have no idea when that will be broached, but I have learned that if we're sweating and scared of a scene, that's usually a good sign to do it."
