Jason Blum is one of the most successful horror movie producers of all time. He's the twisted mind behind mega hits like the Paranormal Activity movies, the Insidious movies, The Purge, Sinister, Ouija and more. Last year, Blum was responsible for the chilling reality series/psychological experiment Stranded that left real people alone in the nation's most notorious haunted houses.

MStars News reporter Star Connor had the chance to talk one-on-one with the creative producer about his new project: Ascension. Ascension, an ambitious, six-hour television event on Syfy, follows a covert U.S. space mission launched in the 1960s that sent hundreds of men, women and children on a century-long voyage to populate a new world.

Half-way into their journey, the mysterious murder of a young woman causes the ship's population to question the true nature of their mission.

Star: You're the mind behind some of the most successful horror movies of all time. Is there a secret or a special recipe behind what makes a really good scary movie?

Jason: Well, I love scary movies, they're really fun. I've always loved roller-coasters, I was always a kind of thrill seeker — that includes things I've watched on TV and in movie theaters, so that's why I like scary movies. ... A good scary movie, or a good scary TV show is one where you're really involved in the characters and what they are doing. If the acting is good, and the stories are good, then the scares are easy.

You can have the best scares in the world ... but if you don't have a good story, then it's not scary, that's my scary movie theory.

Star: In addition to movies, you also produce TV shows. Last year you introduced Stranded, a reality show that leaves real people alone in actual haunted houses. What was that experience like?

Jason: That was my first reality TV show, so it's really fun. I've only done scripted shows before so it was my first time doing that. I learned a lot. ... I learned a lot about the show I liked, and a lot about what I would do better next time. Paranormal activity movies are really the fake version of Stranded, so the idea was let's make a real paranormal activity to get people to believe in ghosts and put them in a place that there were ghosts and give them a camera and have them film themselves.

Star: I kind of believe in ghosts, I believe that there is something out there. Is that fake or are they real?

Jason: I don't believe in ghosts. I think there's something going on out there that we're not sure of, but I don't quite believe in ghosts. I appreciate the people who do, the families in our paranormal activity movies are big believers in ghosts.

Star: What was the inspiration for Ascension?

Jason: It's about space travel, takes place 49 years ago where you put 300 people on a ship, almost like a huge cruise ship, and send it on a journey to go to a place that takes 100 years to get to. Everyone that got on the ship, they're all going to die, only their kids and grandkids and great-grandkids are actually going to make it to their final destination ...

I love the riddle that was proposed. Could that really happen — if it happened, what would people do and would people be upset, would they survive and how do you get food for people, and water? ... How do you put people on a ship and they don't go crazy? Those are notions that we played with when we were putting the story of Ascension together.

Star: You were behind production of The Purge. That movie was crazy. Where did you come up with the ideas for that film?

Jason: I don't come up with them, I recognize them from other people, and I help get them made. I'm attracted to them. ... The Purge was by a guy named James DeMonaco that came up with the idea, and I just loved the idea. I thought the idea was such an interesting idea, and such a crazy idea, so that's why we did it.
