'MI5: Rogue Nation' Star Tom Cruise 'Jack Reacher 2' w/ 'Last Samurai' Director Films Soon?

The sequel to one of Tom Cruise's most critically acclaimed and underrated movies, Jack Reacher (which you can watch on Netflix right now!) is on the way with a pretty amazing director rumored to be helming the project. According to new reports, the Mission: Impossible 5 - Rogue Nation action movie star has signed on for Jack Reacher 2, based on author Lee Child's novel series' 18^th book Never Go Back, and could reunite with The Last Samurai director Ed Zwick, who is also in talks to write the sequels script with Marshall Herskovitz. Again, Jack Reacher is a highly underrated film. Cruise portrays a former Major in the United States Army Military Police Corps who ends up investigating mysterious cases involving himself, other military personnel and more. Cruise portrays this character in a way that would make audiences forget that he's the biggest movie star in the world. Think Ryan Gosling in Drive but with more intimidation (and less height!).

The first film was based on author Lee Child's 9^th book in the Reacher series, and the sequel will jump to the 18^th novel for inspiration, according to Slash Film. Director Ed Zwick is apparently in talks to take on the project, replacing Christopher McQuarrie in the director's chair, according to Cinema Blend. McQuarrie teamed up again with Cruise on Edge of Tomorrow and 2015's Mission: Impossible 5 - Rogue Nation, which hits theaters this summer.

The creator of the series, Child (real name Jim Grant) opened up about this highly anticipated sequel in Sept. of 2014.

"It's almost a three-hander in terms of audience appeal - you've got Reacher, you've got the woman sidekick (Major Susan Turner), and then you've got this strong teenage girl character which they were very interested in," the author said of the upcoming story.

Here is the synopsis of Jack Reacher 2 (though that may not be the film's actual title) as described by Deadline:

Reacher heads back to his old military base in Virginia to take a woman to dinner who is now the commanding officer. By the time he gets there, she has been arrested, and Reacher finds himself being charged with pummeling one guy and fathering a child with a woman. He can't remember either transgression but gets to the bottom of it with cunning and sometimes brute force.
