While we celebrated a huge step in equal rights with the recent Supreme Court ruling for marriage equality, gay rights had a long battle to get to this point. One story is about to have a big-screen adaptation in theaters in the form of Freeheld starring Julianne Moore and Ellen Page as a lesbian couple. Diagnosed with breast cancer, Detective Laurel Hester (Moore) fought for her pension to be left to her domestic partner (Page) if she died. Steve Carrell and Michael Shannon also star. This movie looks like a great tale of love, determination and opposition all rolled into one tremendous film. Directed by Peter Sollett (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist) and written by Ron Nyswaner (Philadelphia, Soldier's Girl), we're expecting greatness in the film.

Here is the official synopsis of this upcoming film (via Slash Film):

Based on the Oscar®-winning short documentary and adapted by the writer of Philadelphia, Freeheld is the true love story of Laurel Hester (Julianne Moore) and Stacie Andree (Ellen Page) and their fight for justice. A decorated New Jersey police detective, Laurel is diagnosed with cancer and wants to leave her hard earned pension to her domestic partner, Stacie. However the county officials, Freeholders, conspire to prevent Laurel from doing this. Hard-nosed detective Dane Wells (Michael Shannon), and activist Steven Goldstein (Steve Carell), unite in Laurel and Stacie's defense, rallying police officers and ordinary citizens to support their struggle for equality.
