NBC canceled Constantine earlier this year, but the title character will live on as it has been confirmed that Matt Ryan will appear on the upcoming Season 4 of Arrow!

"We are thrilled to have Matt Ryan reprise the role of John Constantine on an upcoming episode of Arrow," executive producer Marc Guggenheim said in a press release. "Matt is an incredibly talented actor and his portrayal of this beloved character was always something we admired. The introduction of magic and mysticism on the show this season has provided a truly organic opportunity for us to bring John Constantine to Arrow and the CW’s DC universe. It will be a well-deserved tip of the hat to all the Constantine fans who were so incredibly supportive of that series."

The announcement was confirmed at the Television Critics' Association Press Tour earlier this week.

It's unclear exactly how Constantine will fit into the Arrow world, but the producers have reiterated that "magic and mysticism" will be the key elements of this fourth season, so his inclusion is fitting in that regard.

Discussions about this have been occurring for months. Back in May, Guggenheim spoke to Variety and said that “there’s a lot of desire on everyone’s part” to bring Constantine to the shared DC TV universe.

“It would be wonderful and we certainly have a million ideas -- it’s hard for me to say mainly because A: it’s not my decision to make and B: with Constantine being shopped around to other networks…it’s really hard to make plans when a show’s kind of in limbo,” he said. He added that “a lot of the pieces are in place, except for that one final piece, which is: what’s the fate of Constantine? That’s the tricky thing. But it comes up in the writers’ room constantly -- we have a number of ideas, one idea that’s particularly exciting to me. We’re in a little bit of a wait-and-see mode, like you guys are.”

Arrow star Stephen Amell also tweeted back then in support of the canceled series.

Amell followed that up with "Can't wait. Constantine & Queen want to get sh*t done. Let's make it happen. #Constantine." Whether that happens or not remains to be seen.

It seemed for a while like Netflix or another outlet might pick up the show, but it never happened.

At Wizard World Comic Con in Philadelphia last weekend, Amell spoke about crossovers in the DC TV universe, even among shows on different networks.

"There is an opportunity for interconnectivity with any DC television show that exists. Like, as an example, yesterday Constantine was cancelled. And there is…yeah, I know, it’s brutal…it’s a good show, and it should come back. And it may come back, like there are various platforms where it could come back,” Amell said, according to ComicBook.com.

“Now, Constantine was an NBC show. I’m on The CW. I had had discussions with DC… so not NBC, not CW… but with DC Entertainment about guest starring on Constantine when it was still on the air. And that was and is still on the table. So we have Flash, we have Legends of Tomorrow, a new show which is directly connected to the Arrow universe, we have Supergirl… I’m sure it’s going to be amazing… there’s Gotham obviously, and I’m missing something… Titans, there you go... we have no shortage of options for me and other characters to populate.”
