Monday night's Season 4 finale of the ABC drama Switched At Birth left fans bewildered by plot twists and a major cliffhanger. Thankfully, the series has been renewed for Season 5. Creator Lizzy Weiss has shared details about the finale and what fans can expect next season.

The final episode of Season 4 was full of surprises. Viewers saw Eric leave will Will, despite Regina's wishes, which almost caused a shootout at the family compound; Toby and Lily had their baby; Bay had her first real art show, where Emmett showed up with an apology and Travis kissed her; and Daphne stubbornly went off to China although she had been removed from the program after Mingo told her that they needed a break.

Then, in the last minutes of the show, fans watched the storyline jump to 10 months later, to where both Daphne and Bay are living and working in China. Bay is now a tattoo artist and Daphne keeps busy at a local clinic. The dream-like reality was cut short after Bay received a call that they need to go back home immediately.

In an interview with TV Line, Weiss shared why there was such a large time jump in the episode. "We just really wanted to add a cliffhanger so that, if we were lucky enough to come back, we'd have something to jump off of. And it felt natural to jump them a little bit, to take them into their futures," she said.

Their futures are still unplanned at the moment. Weiss spoke with The Wrap about what's next for the two and shared there's still multiple ways the plot could go. She explained, "We had a million ideas [for what the cliffhanger would be], and we may still use a couple of them. There are some stories that I still love and that we may still use."

Season 5 of Switched at Birth will begin in Jan. 2016.
