Zayn Malik's departure from One Direction might have been one of the most shocking and unexpected moment for tween fans of the X-factor boy band in the last year, but while many were blindsided by his exit, there is one person that is saying he saw the split coming for a very long time, the guy's longtime manager, Simon Cowell.

According to Us Weekly, the former American Idol judge and creator of the super popular band explained that he could feel the exit coming for some time.

"I knew Zayn was going before it happened," the 56-year-old music industry expert explained in a new interview with Event magazine according to Perez Hilton. "He was unhappy. My concern was actually for the boys.

As for why Malik left, Cowell revealed that it was Zayn's current situation and his unhappiness that lead to the departure.

"Zayn wasn't in a great place but it was his decision to leave, he wasn't kicked out. He wanted to distance himself. My responsibility was to the boys because they had no warning," the music guru told the magazine.

The site is also reporting that Cowell rubbed fans of the boy band the wrong way, when he made a comment when he shared the stage with the guys at an award show, saying, "Who needs Zayn?"

According to The Inquistr, Cowell apologized for the incident, saying, "I just kind of thought when I was standing on stage with them, that they were back to being five," adding, "I apologize to any Zayn fans out there. It was meant as a joke."

The band just released their newest album Made in the A.M. last week, but they have revealed that they will be taking a hiatus from the group through next year.
