Long-time coach of the New York Giants, Tom Coughlin, announced his decision to step down as the head man after meeting with the organization's ownership on Monday. The decision came one day after New York finished its 2015-16 season, their third consecutive season with a losing record. The 69-year-old was in charge for 12 years, a period of time that saw the franchise win two Super Bowl titles.

"I met with John Mara and Steve Tisch this afternoon, and I informed them that it is in the best interest of the organization that I step down as head coach," Coughlin said in a statement, via ESPN. "I strongly believe the time is right for me and my family and, as I said, the Giants organization.  It has been an honor and a privilege to serve as head coach of the New York Football Giants. This is a not a sad occasion for me. I have spent 15 years with this organization as an assistant and head coach and was fortunate to be part of three Super Bowl-winning teams. A Lombardi Trophy every five years is an achievement in which we all take great pride."

The Giants organization hadn't had 3 consecutive losing seasons since they endured a stretch of 8 losing seasons in a row from 1973 to 1980, according to ESPN. New York has now missed the playoffs 4 years in a row, and six of the past seven--a fate nobody in the franchise expected.

"Obviously, the past three years have not been what any of us expect, and as head coach, I accept the responsibility for those seasons," Coughlin's statement said, via ESPN.

And while Couglin's time in New York is done, that doesn't necessarily mean that he's done with football altogether. He was asked whether or not his passion for coaching football had dried up, answering with a definitive, "Not necessarily," that according to nfl.com. That question was then followed up by something more tangible, and he was asked specifically if he would be coaching next year, if the right opportunity came along, of course.

"I didn't say that, I just said I'm not necessarily done with coaching," Coughlin said, via nfl.com. "Thank you very much for asking."

There you have it, Coughlin's a maybe. He could coach somewhere else, he could step into an advising role with the Giants, or he could retire somewhere with a pleasant climate to sip on beverages with tiny umbrellas in them all day long. It's anybody's guess at this point.
