'The Vampire Diaries' Star Ian Somerhalder & Nina Dobrev to Reunite for 'The Originals'?

The CW's The Vampire Diaries has been renewed for an eighth season but there has been a lot of talk that the show's run may come to an end a little earlier than expected. With The Originals doing exceptionally well, there are chances that the prominent stars of The Vampire Diaries -- Ian Somerhalder and Nina Dobrev -- will join the ongoing series.

The Vampire Diaries premiered on Sept. 10, 2009. The story takes place in Mystic Falls, Virginia, a fictional small town which is haunted by supernatural beings like witches, werewolves and vampires. The story follows the series protagonist, Elena Gilbert (played by Dobrev), as she falls in love with a vampire, Stefan Salvatore (played by Paul Wesley). As the story progresses, Gilbert finds herself drawn towards Stefen's brother, Damon Salvatore (played by Somerhalder), and that results in some horrible events.

On the other hand, The Originals is a spinoff The Vampire Diaries and it follows the story of the Mikaelson siblings. In 2015, it was reported by The Hollywood Reporter that The CW has given a green light for the series to deliver a third and fourth season.

After the enormous success of The Vampire Diaries, fans started to love Dobrev and Somerhalder. It was reported by Glamour Magazine that the couple started dating in mid-2010, although the duo parted ways after three years of dating.

Now, there is buzz that the two may reprise their roles in upcoming seasons of The Originals.

Celebrity Dirty Laundry reported that there are chances that Dobrev will quit The Vampire Diaries if Somerhalder will renew his contract for next season. The online daily also reported that after The Vampire Diaries, she is most likely to make her debut on The Originals. So, if Dobrev makes an appearance on The Originals, there is a chance that Somerhalder and other prominent stars from The Vampire Diaries will reprise their roles.

The Season 7 of The Vampire Diaries continues Friday nights on The CW.
