The cast and crew of The Walking Dead appear to be standing by the season finale's jaw-dropping cliffhanger, which doesn't reveal just who it was that Jeffrey Dean Morgan's Negan decided to bludgeon with his beloved baseball bat Lucille. Now Andrew Lincoln, who plays Rick Grimes in the AMC show, has decided to speak up about the ending in "Last Day on Earth," stating that it was "a brilliant way" to conclude Season 6!

Lincoln spoke to ComicBook.com about the sixteenth episode of The Walking Dead Season 6, where he commented that he understood why fans reacted the way that they did.

"I think people are well within their limits to feel whatever they feel," Lincoln said, stating that he felt that the viewers reacted in a certain way because they were invested in the series.

"That reaction is a compliment in itself; that they're feeling things, that they're angry about it and they're taking it upon themselves to write about it because people are devoted to the show and they want to go on this ride," he said.

Lincoln also confirmed that he supported the decision to end "Last Day on Earth" with the brutal cliffhanger that was filmed perfectly by director Greg Nicotero.

"I will say, not in defense because I don't necessarily think it needs to be defended, [but] because I think it's a brilliant way to finish a season in this manner, in the way it was shot, with the way Greg did it... I thought it was extraordinary," he declared.

In case you have already forgotten just how the season finale ended, here's a refresher.

Lincoln admitted that he loved the whole idea of seeing Negan's brutal attack through his victim's eyes.

"It was like an assault on the audience almost, the way that we go to their POV," he said. "It's an incredibly dynamic way to do it."

In addition to that, Lincoln praised executive producer Scott Gimple for choosing to change things up for the upcoming seventh season of The Walking Dead.

"I do think that it's a courageous thing that Scott's chosen to do," he said before leaving a message to the TWD viewers.

"I will say to the fans that leaving it open-ended in this way means that we have to return to the season in the opening episode with a terrible, emotionally impactful episode, which is not conventional storytelling," Lincoln stated.

In the end, it looks like the man who plays Rick doesn't regret anything about the episode. "Personally, I love it," he concluded.

The Walking Dead Season 7 is expected to air on AMC in October.
