Will 'Suicide Squad' Get R-Rated Sequel? Director David Ayer Says It's Worth "Lobbying For"

If Deadpool has proven anything, it's the possibility that an R-rated film could still be a resounding commercial success. Although Warner Bros. and director David Ayer have already decided not to take the same path with Suicide Squad, is there still a chance that the sequel featuring Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie) and the rest of Task Force X could get an R-rating?

Ayer recently attended the Warner Bros. CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, where he spoke to MTV about the decision to keep Suicide Squad PG-13 instead to just going all out on the villain ensemble flick.

"For an R movie, you have to decide to do it right out the gate, and that was never the case here," he stated, explaining that there was no intention to make Suicide Squad an R-rated movie.

"We were always going to hit the PG-13 rating, but the film is meant to be that," Ayer continued, adding that Suicide Squad works with just the right amount of violence.

"It's got edge and it's got attitude and it's got its own voice," he said. "There's a lot in the film that's going to surprise people."

OK, since no one can dissuade Ayer from pushing it further with the current movie, is there any possibility that the Suicide Squad sequel will get an R-rating? The End of Watch director seems to like that idea.

"It would be worth lobbying for," he admitted.

Although it has not yet been confirmed whether there will be a Suicide Squad 2, fans are already hoping that a sequel could be one of the yet-untitled films that Warner Bros. has added to the current DC Extended Universe roster.

Suicide Squad also stars Academy Award winner Jared Leto as The Joker, Will Smith as Deadshot, Viola Davis as Amanda Waller and Cara Delevingne as Enchantress. The movie will premiere on Aug. 5.
