There is little doubt that The Joker is one of the most recognizable villains in history. Although each incarnation of the DC character has been distinctive and scary, Jared Leto's version of Batman's ultimate nemesis in Suicide Squad looks like the most terrifying Joker of them all. But how did the Dallas Buyers Club star come up with the Clown Prince of Crime's edgy new look? Leto has just confirmed that he and director David Ayer created The Joker's tattoos from their own "sick and twisted minds!"

Leto recently spoke to Entertainment Weekly, where revealed that Ayer knew what he wanted the Joker to look like right from the start.

"David had some very specific ideas," Leto said, adding that he worked with the director to come up with the character's distinctive "look."

"As far as the look of The Joker, it was a collaborative process," he said, explaining how he and Ayer discussed how the villain should appear in Suicide Squad.

"There were things I brought to the table and things David brought to the table and it was a mash-up of both of our sick and twisted minds," Leto shared. "There were specific things that he liked and wanted and I was there to help bring them to life in the best way I could."

But whose idea was it that The Joker should be covered in ink in the first place? The Academy Award winner revealed that it was Ayer's vision.

"You know, David was specific with tattoos," Leto admitted. "They were his idea but there was a lot to play with."

Suicide Squad will also be the first cinematic outing of The Joker's sidekick, Harley Quinn, who will be played by Margot Robbie. The trailers have hinted on the possibility that Harley's origin story will be featured in the film.

Catch Leto as The Joker in Suicide Squad, which hits theaters on August 5.
