Sigurd's death will play a major role in the further divisiveness of Ragnar Lothbrok's sons when History's "Vikings" returns for its much anticipated Season 5. This was promised by series creator Michael Hirst to fans of the show to were shocked by the death of Ragnar's son by the hands of his own brother in the Season 4 finale.

In his interview with Variety, Hirst said that they made sure to establish in Season 4 finale the cracks that have begun to show in the relationship of the brothers immediately after they accomplished their singular mission of avenging their father's death.

Bjorn wanted to continue exploring and conquering lands in the Mediterranean, while Ubbe seemed content to lead his people in raising farmlands like his father wanted. Hvitserk seemed content with the status quo but it was Ivar who wanted to abandon the farming idea to continue going into battle. His temper unfortunately caused him to slay his brother who would have been a great general. This is expected to weigh heavily into the separate directions that the brothers will take in the new season.

"These people are playing for possession of the known world. It's not like a little local fight - these are huge territories. The Great Army has conquered a huge part of England. How do we behave now? That's what Season 5 opens with," Hirst said.

Hirst also shared that Tudors' actor Jonathan Rhys Myers will play an important role in the final seasons of the series. He admitted that after Ragnar's death, he is planning to continue the series for another two seasons.

Myers character Bishop Heahmund, he said, will be a new breed of saxon hero who could stand up to the Vikings, and is actually based on a real life historical figure. The character will serve as a foil to Ragnar's sons since he was a well educated warrior who knew how to oppose spiritual opponents like pagans.

As for Floki, a post by Nerdist suggested that after the death of Helga and his vow to turn his life over to the gods, Gustaf Skarsgård deserves to get his own spin off show to give his character the avenue he deserved to tell his story. The post said that ever since the third season, the show seemed to be too small of a venue for the complex character that Skarsgård was able to create and this was a good reason to develop a show about his own journey.

The official release of Vikings Season 5 is yet to be announced by History.
