The "Sea of Thieves" pirate game will be released sometime this 2017, although the date has not been confirmed yet. Game developer Rare and publisher Microsoft Studios have revealed video trailers for the cooperative, open-world game. It promises to be an adventure-filled quest that draws on the pirate mythos and history.

The game was first revealed during the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) 2015, but Rare was slow to release "Sea of Thieves" gameplay trailers. In the game, the pirate players must work together to form a crew and go on quests. According to Digital Trends, players can choose and customize their pirate character's gender, appearance, and outfit.

Players can also choose whether to sail a small boat or gather a crew to man an entire ship. In classic pirate style, players can upgrade their characters that lose limbs by using prostheses. The "Sea of Thieves" world will be huge and will take around six to eight hours to navigate fully. One of its most interest elements, though, is the ship versus ship battle where players take on multiple roles.

Den of Geek reported that the "Sea of Thieves" game is part of Microsoft Studio's Play Anywhere program. The game will be made available on Xbox One and PC. Players will also be able to visit cities and different regions. Non-playable characters (NPCs) will be landlocked and the crew ships players meet will be other players.

There is no one major story arc. Instead, the "Sea of Thieves" game will feature small quests that will force the characters to engage with other players. In the game, it's very real for the players to get ambushed by other players when it comes to finding treasure. Those who die in the game will be in Davy Jones' Locker, where they have to perform multiple tasks to convince the captain to return them to the land of the living. Fans are waiting for the game to be announced during the 2017 E3 briefing on June 11.
