AMD Ryzen has created a dent in Intel's market denomination in the high-end desktop market. AMD's Ryzen lineup of desktop CPUs is currently available as 8 core chips. It seems these powerful processors, however, are not the CPUs to buy if primarily used for the best gaming experience.

AMD Ryzen looked promising when it launched, however, benchmark tests reveal that the Ryzen still lags behind comparable Intel CPUs. The differences in certain tasks are not much and Ryzen is an option for the people who want a high-performance workstation that doubles up as a gaming PC.

To compare the gaming performance of Ryzen, Tom's Guide compared Ryzen 7 1800X CPU with Intel Core i7-6900K and i7-7700K. The setup was paired with Nvidia GeForce GTX 1080 GPU to avoid any bottlenecks in the graphics department. The chip delivered decent frames per second, however, it still lagged behind its Intel counterpart.

Hitman: Ryzen 7 1800X CPU reached 91.7 frames per second (fps) and the similar i7-7700K build rendered at 106.3 fps. Hitman is a modern game and it seems that the AMD Ryzen architecture is still not fully optimised hence it lags behind the Intel Core -i7-7700K, reported ARSTechnica.

Metro: Last Light Redux: It is a reworked version of Metro:2033 which is known to put powerful GPUs on their knees. AMD Ryzen 7 1800X was much more competitive when it came to run this game. The 1800X rendered the game at 91 fps, just below the Core i7-6900K at 93.7 fps and the Core i7-7700K (93.8 fps).

Ashes of the Singularity: It is a real-time strategy video game launched last year and is one of the first games to support Vulcan, which is a new API from AMD. The Ryzen 7 1800X performed poorly in this game compared to Intel chips, reported TomsGuide. It scored 61 fps lagging behind the Core i7-7700K (84.7 fps) and Core i7-6900K at 95.8 fps.

The AMD Ryzen is a comparatively new architecture and it may take some time to mature. The gaming performance is probably the weakest part of the AMD chip, particularly with the new titles. However, the chip is an excellent performer for workstation applications like CAD. It packs double the number of cores than Intel at almost half the price but is a no-match to Intel when it comes to no-compromise gaming.
