‘The Crown’ Actress Vanessa Kirby Lands Lead In ‘Mission: Impossible 6’

"The Crown" star Vanessa Kirby is taking on a lead role in the upcoming "Mission: Impossible 6" together with Tom Cruise.

According to Variety, the specific details of Kirby's character, as well as the plot of the entire film, have not been made known as of this writing. However, Kirby's role is expected to be on the same level as Rebecca Ferguson's character in "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation."

Ferguson herself is also returning in "Mission: Impossible 6," as well as Simon Pegg and Jeremy Renner. "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" director Christopher McQuarrie is also coming back to helm the sixth film.

Kirby's ascent to female lead status in a "Mission: Impossible" movie is expected to bring the actress to greater heights of fame, the same way it bolstered the careers of  Ferguson and Thandie Newton, both of whom played leading roles in previous installments.

As the "Mission: Impossible" franchise heads into its sixth outing, there are questions about whether it has run its course. McQuarrie, however, assures fans that the sixth film will be different from its predecessors.

"It's a very different Ethan Hunt, I can promise you that," McQuarrie tells Empire. Fans have seen Cruise do a variety of crazy stunts over the past five movies, but nothing was ever more death-defying than the opening scene in "Rogue Nation," where Cruise was hanging on the side of a plane. When asked how he would top this off, McQuarrie says he's still not sure.

"I may have found something today. I came to Tom with a picture of something and Tom looked at it and said, 'That's awesome! I want to fall off of that!' It's like, OK, I can see it on a poster, and I can see Tom falling off of it," he shares.

McQuarrie adds that unlike the previous films, "Mission: Impossible 6" will start in an unconventional way-that is, it does not start with action. It's likely that the new film will delve deeper into Ethan's character and his personal life, to give viewers a look at who Ethan really is and what is going on in his head beyond the espionage, the stunts and the action.

"I want to know who Ethan is in this movie, I want an emotional journey for this character, and Tom really embraced it," McQuarrie teases.
