The French film, "Valerian And The City Of A Thousand Planets," directed by French director, Luc Besson, is the most expensive movie made in the particular language till date. It stars Cara Delevingne and Dane DeHane as the lead characters and is based on an adaptation of "Valérian and Laureline," which is a comedy series.

"Valerian" is a sci-fi movie, documenting the adventures of Valerian and Laureline across space and time as they encounter over 100 species of aliens. The elevated special effects, technologically advanced graphics, and production design have incurred an estimated cost of $208M (approx), which is a first where French films are concerned, Comicbook reported.

French films are surpassing Hollywood when it comes to taking monetary risks. "Valerian" is not the only French film that is made on an eye-popping budget this year. French film, "Renegades," also titled "The Lake" has been made on a budget of €66.19 million by EuropaCorp and will release on Sep 1. It is an action thriller, directed by Steven Quale and written and produced by Besson.

The former title for the most expensive French film was held by "Asterix at the Olympic Games," released in 2007, produced with a budget of $82.78M. Incidentally, it also bore the title of "Gérard du cinéma" for being the "Worst French film" of the year, Screen Rant reported.

Hence, the higher the budget of a film is, the greater the expectations attached to it. It certainly does help that Besson, the director of "Valerian" has an array of box office super hits to his name, such as "Nikita," "The Professional," "The Fifth Element," "The Messenger," and "Lucy."

Will "Valerian" live up to people's expectations? Or will it crash and burn like the former holder of the title? Watch the trailer below and leave your thoughts in the comments section.
