Android O, which doesn't have a sweet code name at the moment, is already under development. Improvements in multitasking, notification, Google Chrome autofill and a new home screen for Android TV are highlighted. Vital system optimization will make Apple turn their head into this update.

Apple and Google are homes for the two most used operating systems for smartphones: Android and iOS. Updates of each OSes are aimed to be better than the other one. The battleground is filled with new features every update, but it seems like Google's Android O update is creating a new path. There are no new iOS killer features, but Android O is more friendly to the phone's battery.

One of the new features of the Android O, as reported by CNET, is called "Picture-in-Picture" in which the user will be able to watch a video in a thumbnail window while doing other things on the device. Copy-paste in Android O will also let the user select a name or a whole phone number in one tap. Android TV will also have a new home screen which enables more customization features. Google Lens, Google Home Updates, Google Assistant updates, Google Photo updates, and Google for Jobs will also be included in Android O.

As for the system optimizations, Android O will be more efficient when it comes to running apps, faster and smoother with optimizations such as concurrent compacting garbage collection, as reported by Android Developers Blog. New limits on background location and a change in running background apps promise prevention of overuse resources.

"If your battery goes out at 4 p.m., it doesn't matter what features your phone has," said Stephanie Saad Cuthbertson, director of product management for Android.

Android Go, which is a trimmed version of the Android OS is also available for viewing. Android Go is aimed at entry level phones or those that runs on 1GB or RAM or less. An offline version is available right now and the OS will be shipped in 2018, though it is not confirmed if it will be based on Android O.
