A host of NBA stars, including LeBron James, Kyrie Irving, Kevin Garnett, and Deron Williams, took on racism alongside Jay-Z, wearing 'I Can't Breathe' t-shirts and making their statement regarding race relations at the protested British royal-attended Cleveland Cavaliers-Brooklyn Nets game in Brooklyn last night. The 'I Can't Breathe' slogan were the last words from slain man Eric Garner, who died after being put in a chokehold, and with Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton in the building, the NBA players made their point, saying "it's not a black-or-white issue, it's a people issue". What happens when U.K. royalty meets the U.S. verison? Well, we found out last night as Jay-Z and Beyoncé met British royal couple Prince William and Duchess Kate Middleton, with the royal visit to New York City scoring a meeting between royalty from both sides of the Atlantic. The two couples hung out at last night's game between LeBron James's Cleveland Cavaliers and the Brooklyn Nets, while protests were staged outside the arena. Brooklyn's own royal couple — hip-hop kingpin Jay-Z and Queen of R&B Beyoncé — took the opportunity to meet William and Kate on the court before the start of the fourth quarter of the game, and the two power couples chatted and exchanged pleasantries in a meeting of two different worlds. As the royal pair entered the arena in the third quarter, the majority of the Brooklyn crowd stood to watch the royal pair take their seats amid much security and photo-taking, as a buzz hit the arena as though it was an NBA playoff game. The live TV camera caught Justin TImberlake, a Memphis native and minority owner of the Grizzlies, in the act of pretending to be a camera man at the game against the Miami Heat last Sunday. Getting caught didn't stop him from goofing off. Instead, the singer-actor went all owner-director, scanning, mouthing commands and hilariously breaking the fourth wall. Read More »
In the second high-profile instance of professional athletes making political statements in support of the protests occurring in St. Louis, Missouri, and New York City, Chicago Bulls star guard Derrick Rose etched his position on the side of support for late New Yorker Eric Garner by wearing a shirt that read "I Can't Breathe" during warm-ups before Saturday, Dec. 6's game against the Golden State Warriors. Garner died in July in a police chokehold while he was being arrested. A grand jury decided not to indict the police officer in the incident, inspiring protests around the country that echo those for Michael Brown, the 18-year-old young black man who was killed by a police officer this summer in Ferguson, Missouri. NJIT has only won 76 games since entering Division I. A big part of that was the 51-game losing streak the team went on from February 2007 to January 2009, after jumping up a division. That's almost two straight years of losing. For comparison, the Philadelphia 76ers last week narrowly missed making NBA history after starting the season 0-17. Sports Illustrated gave Magic Johnson his first exposure in its amateur-themed "Faces in the Crowd" feature when Johnson was a teenager. Of course, he went on to become one of the best college and professional basketball players of all time, winning three NBA titles with the Los Angeles Lakers before retiring due to his contraction of HIV in 1991. When Anthony Davis came in to the NBA, many projected that he'd be an elite-level star, but not many knew just how good he'd grow to be, and how much better he can still become.
