The San Francisco 49ers have parted ways with star coach Jim Harbaugh, who is on his way to the University of Michigan. All indications are that the coach who went 49-22-1 and tookt eh team to one Super Bowl appearance in his four seasons with the Niners will leave the NFL and take over the NCAA's Wolverines, where he starred as a quarterback between 1983-86. The Niners will now turn to a new coach - perhaps the recently deposed Rex Ryan - to guide them to better than a 68% win percentage, and decide whether or not to trade quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

In a seemingly brilliant move by 49ers CEO Jed York and GM Trent Baalke, the 49ers have just divested themselves of one of the best coaches in the NFL and will receive nothing in return for him, unless he does an about face and is involved in an NFL trade with the likes of the Oakland Raiders (Harbaugh can talk to and sign with Michigan as they're a college team).

CBS Sports's RJ White reports that York told reporters following Harbaugh's final 49ers game - yet another win, this time 20-17 over the Arizona Cardinals - that "Jim and I have come to the conclusion that it is in our mutual best interest to move in different directions."

"We are now squarely focused on finding the next head coach of the 49ers and I am very confident in Trent's [GM Trent Baalke] ability to lead that process," sated York. "With the great leaders and talented players we have in our locker room, we are ready to move into the next chapter of our team's history."

Harbaugh in a statement called his time with Niners a "great privilege" and said that he and the team "accomplished many great things together". He finished saying: "I will always appreciate and remember fondly, the passion and support of our faithful fans, and want to express my particular thanks to them."

ESPN report that the deal agreed to between Harbaugh and Michigan is worth "At least" $48 million across six years.

As per CBS's Michael Hurcomb, "The 49ers and Harbaugh announced after Sunday's game against the Cardinals that both parties agreed to mutually part ways."

Since then, ESPN's Adam Scheffer has reported that the University of Michigan has told the team's biggest financial and recruiting supporters that "a deal for Jim Harbaugh is done and a press conference is scheduled for Tuesday."

For Michigan, says Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports, the move is huge coup, saying that the University is "set to hire the coach it needs to return to the upper echelon of the sport."

But as CBS Sports's Jason La Canfora reports, the Oakland Raiders are still planning on offering thier head coaching role to Harbaugh, saying: "Oakland owner Mark Davis plans to discuss the matter with 49ers ownership as soon as the season concludes."

He added that Oakland owner Davis "would be willing to engage in a trade for Harbaugh if necessary."

Sorry to 49ers fans, and congrats to Michigan. At least 49er fans will be able to rely on the nous and strategic ability of their CEO and GM...
